One of the most influential characteristics of your breast cancer is whether or not it is invasive. If a breast cancer is invasive, this means that it has spread beyond the breast to the surrounding tissue. Invasive cancers are considerably more serious, because they can pass into the bloodstream or lymphatic system and spread to other parts of the body.
Non-invasive or in situ cancers are those that are contained in the breast ducts or lobules, and they have not spread to the surrounding breast tissue. However, in situ cancers can develop into a more invasive or serious form of cancer.
