Where should I get a mammogram?

Mammograms are available at a number of different places — clinics and independent centers, traditional hospitals, and even mobile units. Although it may be tempting to pick the facility closest to home or work, don't let convenience be your top priority. Select a facility based on the reputation of the radiologists and the quality of the equipment. The newer the equipment, the more accurate the results.

Be sure that the facility that has been accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). ACR guidelines set standards for radiologists (doctors) who read the films, for technicians, for reports, for mammography machines, and for film-developing materials. Accreditation by the ACR means that the radiologists and technicians are specially trained and certified in mammography, that the equipment has met standards, and that the equipment is inspected regularly.

You can contact the National Cancer Institute (800-4-CANCER) or the American College of Radiology (800-227-5463) to get a listing of the certified mammography providers in your area.
