The radiation therapist will position you on a table and then place protective shields on you to protect your healthy tissues and organs. He or she may or may not position forms or other devices around you to help you keep completely still during the procedure.
Once you are in position, the radiation therapist will leave the room. Don’t worry, because the radiation therapist can still see and hear you from the equipment room. If you are feeling any anxiety or discomfort, you can communicate this to the radiation therapist, who can respond immediately.
At this point, the equipment in the room will begin to move around your body. The application of radiation only takes between 1 and 5 minutes. You will not feel, hear, see or smell anything unusual. The entire treatment is painless, not unlike having an x-ray. After the treatment, the radiation therapist will return to the room and help you down from the treatment table. |
