Effect of Radiation Therapy on Additional Cancer

Does radiation therapy increase my risk of developing cancer in my other breast?

No. Radiation therapy to one breast does not increase your chance of getting cancer in the other breast.

Contrary to what you might have heard from non-medical sources, radiation therapy does not make your whole body radioactive. The therapeutic radiation you receive is targeted precisely to the affected breast area, with almost no exposure of ("scatter" to) other areas of your body.
