Radical Mastectomy

What is a radical mastectomy?

Radical mastectomy (also called the Halsted radical mastectomy) is the surgical removal of the breast, chest muscles, and all of the lymph nodes under the arm.

For many years in the past, a radical mastectomy was the surgical operation used to treat most breast cancer patients. Currently, however, radical mastectomies are performed only when the breast cancer has spread to the chest muscles.
