Radiation Therapy After a Mastectomy

When is radiation added after a mastectomy?

If any of the following conditions were present, radiation therapy may be recommended after a mastectomy:

  • The tumor was larger than five centimeters

  • The removed tissue had a positive margin of resection (meaning that some cancer cells might still be present in that part of the chest)

  • Four or more lymph nodes were involved

  • The cancer was multi-centered, meaning that it occurred in several locations within the breast
